EBS is the storage service for EC2. If you want a file system on your Linux or Windows Instance, it will be backed by EBS. EBS is a building block for everything that Amazon storage outside of S3. Even hybrid solutions such as VMware Cloud on AWS use EBS as the interface to directly-connected storage devices on your vSphere hosts. I talked with the then VP of VMware Engineering at VMworld 2019. She shared how AWS and VMware worked together to make VSAN, VMware’s hyperconverged storage solution, talks directly to EBS vs. the local hardware.
Snapshots are another great feature of EBS. However, don’t confuse snapshots with backup. There’s an AWS Backup product we’ll cover in the future. However, you can watch an extended video we created with AWS.
