Who would ever thought AWS would offer kind of a cloud-based file server.

According to people who sell object storage, object storage has killed off the need for NFS for cloud-based systems. There’s no doubt that Object Storage, specifically S3, has fueled a whole new class of applications. However, you can’t understate the importance of NFS. AWS has offered a managed NFS service for several years. You can think of it as having a File Server in the cloud without needing to manage the underlying EC2 and EBS resources.
